About Phil Martelli

Phil Martelli is more than a legendary basketball coach; he is a lifelong mentor, community leader, and advocate for positive change. With a career spanning over 34 years, Phil has left an indelible mark on college basketball, first as head coach at Saint Joseph’s University and most recently as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Michigan. Known for his leadership, integrity, and unmatched dedication, Phil has achieved milestones such as the 2004 Consensus National Coach of the Year and numerous postseason victories. However, if you ask him, his proudest moments go beyond the wins and accolades—they revolve around the lives he’s impacted.

Throughout his career, Phil’s guiding principle has been simple: “Make a Difference.” This mantra has shaped not only his approach to coaching but also his deep commitment to education, service, and community. The Making a Difference Campaign is at the heart of Phil’s current work. His mission is to inspire educators, students, and communities to lead with purpose, build meaningful relationships, and create lasting positive change.

Phil believes that the core of this movement lies in the power of gratitude and the importance of a simple “thank you.” Whether working with a school, a community group, or a corporate team, Phil emphasizes the impact that recognition and appreciation can have in motivating others to be their best selves. Through his presentations, Phil shares real-life stories and lessons from his career—stories of triumph, failure, teamwork, and the transformative power of kindness.

His "Make a Difference" initiative focuses on equipping educators, administrators, and students with the tools they need to foster respect, responsibility, and a sense of service. By encouraging individuals to value real relationships, embrace the power of gratitude, and continually strive for improvement, Phil is empowering others to take the lead in their own communities.

Phil Martelli’s work is not just about delivering motivational speeches; it’s about inspiring a ripple effect of positive action. He believes that when one person decides to make a difference, it spreads—impacting schools, families, workplaces, and beyond.

Phil continues to travel, speak, and mentor with a single goal in mind: to inspire as many people as possible to embrace the power of “thank you,” connect deeply with others, and ultimately, make a lasting difference. Whether you’re in a classroom, boardroom, or locker room, Phil’s message is universal: the ability to create change is in your hands.
